Star Party Packages
Watch Perseid Meteor Showers from Sacred Rocks Reserve; Special Viewing Events August 8 -11 at Park’s Stargazer Plateau
Boulevard, CA
Sacred Rocks Reserve, (formerly Outdoor World RV Park), a 163-acre wilderness reserve with RV and tent camping sites (Sacred Rocks RV Park), will offer “Star Party” packages for guests to view the Persied Meteor Showers, Friday night, August 8, through Monday night August 11. The Reserve is located at an elevation of just under 4,000 feet, near Boulevard, California, approximately 65 miles East of San Diego along Interstate 8. Far from city lights and the coastal glare from Camp Pendleton, the property offers a clear vantage point from which to view the stars. The “Star Party” package includes a 10% discount on tent and RV site rentals during those four nights, a community bonfire and marshmallow roast at 8:00 pm and star viewing from the Park’s 300 foot “Stargazer Plateau” at 9:00 p.m. Guests are welcome to bring telescopes, lawn chairs and sleeping bags and stay out on the Plateau as late as they wish. Reservations are required. For information, call: 619-766-4480 or visit: www.sacredrocksreserve.com. Sacred Rocks Reserve is located at 37133 Highway 94 in Boulevard, California.
“Out here, the stars are so bright and the sky so clear, guests should see a great show,” says owner Sharon Courmousis. Courmousis and her husband Dimitri have owned the property for five years, and during that time, have cleaned up and restored the land. “When we bought the property, The Star Gazer Plateau was heaped with a garbage pile so high, you couldn’t see over it. Now it’s clear and a perfect place from which to watch the night sky,” she says.
“Serious meteor hunters should plan to start their watch around 9:00 p.m. on Monday evening the 11th. This is the time to look for Perseid Earthgrazers--meteors that approach from the horizon and skim the atmosphere overhead like a stone skipping across the surface of a pond. ‘Earthgrazers are long, slow and colorful; they are among the most beautiful of meteors,’ says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center. He cautions that an hour of watching may net only a few of these at most, but seeing even one can make the whole night worthwhile. The peak of this year’s meteor shower is predicted to be during the dark pre-dawn hours of Tuesday morning, August 12. ‘For maximum effect, get away from city lights,’ Cooke advises.” (Philosophy of Science Portal).
